College Student Crime Lawyer

Myrtle Beach College Student Crime Lawyer

In a recent year, approximately 158,000 students were enrolled in four-year universities in South Carolina. Combined with stunning coastline views, it is no wonder that South Carolina is the “go-to” state for individuals seeking to further their education. We have seen a significant increase in the enrollment at Coastal Carolina University (CCU) and Horry Georgetown Technical College (HGTC).  While exceptional education and a laid back atmosphere may be appealing, in recent years more college students find themselves getting into legal trouble.

At The Law Offices of Brad L. Richardson, LLC, our Myrtle Beach college student crime lawyer has defended countless clients facing criminal charges. If you have gotten into trouble while attending a college or university, you need to retain representation immediately.

Common College Student Crimes in Myrtle Beach, SC

Common crimes committed by college students in Myrtle Beach include:

Driving Under the Influence

South Carolina college campuses are known for having raucous parties. Although there is nothing wrong with having a good time, things can get out of hand quickly. Each year, more than one million people are arrested for driving under the influence. Over 12,000 traffic fatalities are alcohol-related, threatening the safety of young people. In short, if you choose to drink, don’t get behind the wheel – use a designated driver or ride share service such as Uber.

Marijuana Possession

As of date, possessing any amount of marijuana for recreational or medical use remains illegal in South Carolina. Even possessing less than one ounce of marijuana is classified as a misdemeanor, punishable by up to 30 days in jail and a fine of up to $200.

Shoplifting

Shoplifting may involve taking items from a store, removing or altering price tags, or transferring displayed merchandise to another container, all to avoid paying the full retail price. South Carolina has some of the strictest penalties concerning shoplifting, with the severity of the punishment depending on the value of the stolen property. If the shoplifted items total less than $2,000 in value, you may be fined up to $1,000 or imprisoned for 30 days. However, if you shoplifted $10,000 or more in merchandise, then you may be imprisoned for up to 10 years.

Disorderly Conduct

SC Code §16-17-530 defines disorderly conduct as any disorderly or boisterous behavior exhibited in a public place for the purpose of disturbing the peace. The law defines different types of disorderly conduct, with public intoxication being common among college students. First time offenders may be eligible for a Conditional Discharge wherein if the offender completes the program outlined by the Court, he or she can have the charge discharged or dismissed.  Failure to complete the program could result in a sentence of thirty (30) days in jail or a fine of One Hundred and No/100 Dollars ($100.00) plus court fees and assessments.

Reckless Driving

Drag racing, excessive speeding, ignoring traffic signals, or any type of aggressive behavior behind the wheel is considered reckless driving. First-time offenders are subject to 30 days imprisonment and up to $200 in fines. Repeated offenders may have their licenses suspended. If the police discover you were drinking and your behavior results in serious bodily injury to another, you may be charged with reckless vehicular homicide.

Even having an arrest on your record, with the charges later being dismissed, comes with collateral consequences.
